Poetry and the Spoken Word: Ishle Yi Park, Bao Phi, and More

One of my favorite books of poems is Ishle Yi Park's The Temperature of This Water. So good. Really good. Korean, too! Check it out at www.ishle.com. Ishle, send me an email. I hope all's well!

One of my students raved about seeing Bao Phi. Looks cool. www.baophi.com.

One of the first spoken word films I ever saw was Slam, which included Beau Sia. www.beausia.com. (And no, I am not a slam poet/spoken word artist and do not put on "poetry slams," as a colleague once said. I admire it like crazy, but I can't do it.)

Women doing their thing: www.mangotribe.com. I think Fresno's ready/overdue for something similar.

hi lee, yes i have bao phi's chapbook, and it's just so great. his work is so sharp and well written. i used a couple of his poems for a CW workshop i taught in AAS last semester, and one of my students wrote the best poem after his FOB poem.

Bao Phi is releasing a new cd of his on June 10th, and he's a supportive and phenomenal figure up here in the Midwest. It's always great to work with him.

I'll also give a grateful nod over to Ed Bok Lee, another Minnesota writer who's having his first book of poetry printed by New Rivers Press this fall.

They're both some great voices for Asian American activism and poetics.

Cool...thanks for the heads up about Ed Bok Lee's book, Bryan. I'll look for it. Hey, thank you also very much for the copy of the journal. I will give you my work address here, since I am having a hard time with my hotmail account. I will be grateful---Lee Herrick, Fresno City College, English Dept., 1101 E. Many thanks.
