I turn thirty - _____ on Sunday. Yes, it's another birthday, and I feel good. * I'm thoroughly enjoying Ha Jin's new book, The Writer as Migrant. * I'm excited to have been invited to read at my alma mater next spring. * Ate at the new Ethiopian restaurant today for lunch. It was very nice. * Heavy rotation: "Every Valley Is Not a Lake," Cold War Kids. * Currently teaching : Paolo Freire's Education for Critical Consciousness. *You are living proof, the breath, the what that might light that coal *

Well an early happy birthday to ya, Lee!

My Brightest Diamond's new one is in heavy rotation for me, though it's definitely not workout music.

Still have yet to get the CWK album. Maybe soon.

Happy thirty-______ birthday, Lee.

Haven't ever read Paolo Freire, though have known about him for many many years. Just haven't ever gotten around to reading him.

In the mid-1970's, when I was a student at the Experimental College at the U. of Minnesota (highly non-traditional program, where committees made up of students and staff (with students in the majority) governed the college, made admission decisions, set academic standards, and hired the staff), many of the people I knew in the program were reading, or had read, Freire's classic work Pedagogy of the Oppressed.

Sooner or later, someday, I want to get to that one.

Thanks, Lyle! Good to hear from you. I liked Pedadogy of the Oppressed, and while Education for Critical Consciousness is bit more dense, I want to stretch the students as they consider culture, power, and the elite and its interests in a sui generis democracy, as Freire calls it.
